Detroit will become Spin City this weekend, as thousands of public relations pros gather for their annual convention.

The 2008 Public Relations Society of America International Conference will draw 2,500 public relations professionals, including 800 students, from around the country to the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center and surrounding areas Saturday through Tuesday.

"Presenters absolutely blew us away with their passion for having us there," said Public Relations Society of America Chair and CEO Jeff Julin about why the group chose Detroit as the site of this year's convention.

The amount of redevelopment in the city, including the casinos, restaurants, sporting venues and cultural attractions like the remodeled Detroit Institute of Arts, and the general vibe of the city left him impressed when he visited Detroit leading up to the convention, he said.

"They just have been terrific from the very beginning as a conference city," he said. "Great things are going on there. I'm quite impressed at how far the city has come with a new direction for itself."
