Guardian Building serves as inspiration for artist competition

One of downtown’s Art Deco masterpieces will serve as the inspiration for an artistic contest that is part of the Detroit Jazz Festival.

The festival is working with the Arts League of Michigan to put on the contest. Local artists are asked to submit work that is inspired by the Guardian’s architecture and history. The winner will take home $300, two VIP passes to the festival and be recognized as the official artist for the 30th anniversary poster.

The Guardian was built in 1929 and is one of the boldest examples of Art Deco construction in the world. It incorporates bright colors along with Aztec, American Indian and modern influences.
