IC Data Communications continues to create jobs in TechTown

Making the move to the IT world has turned out to be the right decision for the two people behind IC Data Communications.

Dwayne Carson and Terence Willis folded their local phone company four years ago so they could start their IT firm in TechTown. Since making that move the company has grown to 12 employees, four contractors and one intern. It has two positions open and expects to add another two people by the end of the year and two more in the first quarter of next year.

"We've been growing steadily," Carson says.

Switching areas was an easy decision for the two. They both had some background in IT and saw it as an industry that is going to continue to grow for the foreseeable future.

"We wanted to be in an industry that was always growing and always changing and never would become obsolete," Carson says.

Today IC handles the IT needs for schools and small- and medium-sized businesses. Some of their biggest clients include NextEnergy in TechTown and a handful of charter schools in metro Detroit.

All of this business has come from word-of-mouth referrals. Carson hopes to start marketing the company's services to bring in more business. The goal is to have 10 schools signed on as client by 2009.
