Small business owners in inner-city Detroit can apply for a free mini MBA-style program, courtesy of the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The federal agency selected Detroit as one of 15 cities nationwide to participate in the Emerging 200 initiative. As part of the program, 20 business owners can send their executives to an in-depth training program focusing on organization management, growth strategies, market development and strategic planning.

To qualify, companies must have been in business for at least three years, have about $400,000 or more in gross annual revenues and be in certain Detroit neighborhoods.

"We as a nation don't have the luxury of leaving anyone behind ... in this economic race we're in," said Sandy K. Baruah, acting administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, as he kicked off the program Wednesday in Detroit.

"The world is coming on strong, and we need to come on faster."
