MDOT seeks artists for signature Mexicantown pedestrian bridge

The Michigan Department of Transportation is seeking Michigan artists for works that would be installed at the pedestrian bridge that is being built to reconnect Bagley Street over the I-75 divide.

The bridge was designed by VanTine Guthrie and Northville's inFORM studio, and is intended to connect the eastside of Mexicantown -- home to Ste. Anne's, Matrix Theatre and the new Detroit Mexicantown International Welcome Center and Mercado -- to the western heart of the restaurant district.

Artists are sought to create artwork for two locations near the eastern base of the pedestrian bridge. The projected cost is $50,000 up to $100,000 and the deadline for submissions is December 1.

Applicants must submit 10 examples of past work in either 35 mm slides or digital files, a work sample narrative, an artist's statement and a resume including three professional references. The selection committee is comprised of nine voting members including a representative from College for Creative Studies, Wayne State University, MDOT, Matrix Theatre, Mosaic Youth Theatre and the project architects.

Renderings of the bridge that include detailed information about the site locations for the artwork are online at www.Michigan.gov/gateway. Click on the "Public Art - Request for Qualifications" PDF link.

The pedestrian bridge will be complete in November 2009 with associated landscaping done the following spring. Take a video tour here.
