According to the article:
A group of local entrepreneurs plan to open a large shopping and dining complex called Asian Village that could be the beginnings of a new cultural district in downtown Detroit.
The village will include a 160-seat restaurant called Asian House, a gourmet grocery store and a catering company. Several partners intend to open the 18,000-square-foot Asian Village next summer just east of Detroit’s Renaissance Center.
The $5 million complex, which will employ 150 full-time and part-time workers, will pattern itself after long-established cultural districts like Detroit’s Greektown and Mexicantown.
A parking deck under construction on the property — at Atwater and Beaubien — will be used by GM employees and visitors to the RenCen. Asian Village will be in retail space built into the first level, facing the Detroit River.
As in Chinatowns in San Francisco and New York, the village will offer daily entertainment that will include parades, dances, concerts and firework displays to draw regional patrons and keep nearby residents coming back.
The plans already have been promoted by Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who touted the project during a trade mission to Japan in July.
