Vacation.com: Detroit Derby Girls worth braving the cold weather

Vacation.com says the Detroit Derby Girls are worth a trek out into the Detroit winter.

Roller Derby is just another example of the gems to be found in Detroit. Sure the city is staggering after repeated blows, and you don't have to look far for some bad news, but there is a vibrant, creative undercurrent that will hopefully use this time to rise to the surface and remake Motor City into a new type of center.

Get this—the derbies are held in a Masonic temple. In fact, it's the Detroit Masonic Temple. Of course, they don't skate in the temple part, it's a whole complex. The place is worth checking out. It's the largest event venue in downtown and was built in the 1920s so it's impressive looking, but there's some even more impressive history to it. For example, the cornerstone was placed using the same trowel that George Washington used to set the cornerstone of the United States Capitol.
