First-time business owners, Debi and Doug Scroggins, put their 401(k) retirement funds and home equity on the line to open their first coffee hut in June 2002. After purchasing the tiny store for $27,000, they spent $40,000 renovating it and turning it "into a log cabin and giving it a campy feel," says the article.
With the store bringing in around $300,000 a year in gross sales, it is now ready to open stores in five more locations, with one of them in Downtown Detroit.
