Jalen Rose Academy, one of four new Detroit high schools, to open next year

Hands up if you're a fan of Jalen Rose, the former Southwestern High School, University of Michigan and NBA star. He was a member of U-M's Fab Five squad in the early 1990s and is now a professional basketball analyst. But best of all, Rose is part of an effort to bring innovative education to Detroit.

The four small high schools will welcome their first class of incoming freshmen next year and will add a grade annually until reaching no more than 500 students. All have committed to graduate 85 percent of its students, send 85 percent of its graduates to college and pledged 85 percent will earn degrees.

The effort is part of the Excellent Schools Detroit coalition that aims to open 70 high performing schools by 2020. It's supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Kresge Foundation, the McGregor Fund and the Skillman Foundation, which have contributed $13 million.
