Silos come down, development moves forward on riverfront

Also to be razed are two other former cement transfer stations on either side of Chene Park farther east along the Detroit River.

 

A portion of the silo sites is to become part of Tricentennial State Park, Michigan’s first urban state park.

 

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick says that the clearance prepares the last links of land needed to build the Detroit RiverWalk, a biking, jogging and walking path planned to eventually run form the MacArthur Bridge at Belle Isle to the Ambassador Bridge.

 

Removing the silos also lets the city move forward on plans for a mixed-use development of major portions of the east riverfront to include apartments, condos, retail shops and entertainment venues.
