TechTown set to launch stem cell lab for start-ups

Stems cells are about to become a key part of TechTown's portfolio now that Wayne County is launching its Stem Cell Commercialization Center in the business incubator.

The lab will provide valuable space for research at a low for start-ups that often struggle with capitalization. The start-ups will also have access to TechTown’s business growth development programs and services to aid in commercializing their research findings.

So far five biotech start-up companies, all Wayne State University spin-offs, are expected to open headquarters at the 2,500-square-foot lab when it opens within six months. They will use the space to develop drugs and other health-care related products. Stem cells are the raw material for drugs that can treat everything from juvenile diabetes to traumatic brain injury.

TechTown executive director Randal Charlton is also engaging in early-stage discussions with stem cell research teams in Sweden, the United Kingdom and Hungary about opening up offices in TechTown.

"We are looking to collaborate with scientists and research universities internationally," Charlton says. "The United States is the largest health care market in the world, and Wayne County is the best place for biotech companies to do business, especially given the access companies now have to this unique innovation and commercialization resource."
