D-Biz: In Lafayette Park, one plaza to serve them all

As a neighborhood, Lafayette Park seems to have everything going for it, including a retail plaza that meets a good many of its residents' needs and, when Downtown Foodland opens later this year, will satisfy most.

Shops at Lafayette Park offers several food choices: Danny Chan's Chinese, Sala Thai and Cottage Inn Pizza. There's a State Farm Insurance office, a video store, and even a nightclub, Intus.

It's not all perfect in the LP. There are dollar and beauty supply stores as well, and the loss of Paris Cafe is lamentable -- Model D can only hope to report of a replacement soon.

There are multiple reasons that Lafayette Park stands as a rare example of a successful, stable urban renewal project -- its stunning architecture and well-planned parks play a big part -- but inclusion of a shopping plaza into the site's residential fabric is certainly a contributing factor.
