WSU breaks ground on 130-unit S. University Village

Wayne State University broke ground on South University Village on March 21. The development is located on Woodward Avenue between Canfield and Forest. Currently a parking lot, it was once a Vernor's factory.

The mixed-use project will consist of the 130-unit Studio One Apartments and a parking structure with ground-floor retail including:
  • Five retail spaces ranging in size from 1,53 to-2,332 square feet in size;
  • a 6,362-square foot restaurant;
  • a 4,940-square foot bank office; and
  • a 6,362-square foot Fifth Third Bank that will serve as the company's main Detroit branch.
WSU President Irvin Reid observed that the development will add $50 million to the $1.6 billion of investment that Midtown has seen over the last ten years. WSU has partnered with Prime Development for the project; it is the university's first public-private partnership. He estimated the project would take 18 months to build.
