Tricentennial Park breaks ground on East Riverfront expansion

Construction on the expansion of Tricentennial State Park and Harbor has begun and will take 275 days to complete, says park manager Eric Cowing.

The walkway closest to the Detroit River's edge as well as the wetlands area will be completed first, with the lighting, landscaping and bike path to follow. The seven-acre wetlands, called the Lowland Park Parcel, is immediately east of the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy's Rivard Plaza and will demonstrate stormwater runoff treatment.

Cowing says that introducing the state park system to an urban audience is a primary goal of the expansion. "We wanted to create a gateway for Detroiters to discover and experience Michigan state parks," he says. "We wanted to connect Detroit's riverfront parks and adjacent neighborhoods, provide recreational opportunities for urban residents and visitors and introduce the local community to opportunities in conservation-like careers."
