Detroit Dream Project to erect sculpture June 10-17

The Old Redford district of Northwest Detroit will soon be the home of a large-scale art installation, The Temple of the American Dream, designed by sculptor David Best. Two Detroit organizations -- The Society to Promote Art and Recreation in the Community and Motor City Blight Busters -- have teamed up with The Black Rock Arts Foundation from San Francisco to raise the funds and manpower necessary to see the project through to fruition.

The Detroit Dream Project, as the collaboration is known, will begin true construction on June 10 and wrap it up on June 17. Best and a crew will be on-site during this time period, along with members of Michigan's Burning Man community.

After a few days of site clean-up, the site will be ready for Bight Busters' 20th anniversary celebration, which will kick-off with a party on June 21.

Project director Danielle Kaltz is excited to see the year-long effort come to fruition. "We've had fits and starts and growing pains," she says. She says the opportunity for collaboration between various types of organizations has been the most gratifying aspect of the project. "Hopefully, this can be a template to do this in other cities," she says.
