Rec Department accepting mini-grant applications for arts and cultural projects

Attention, artists and arts organizations: The Detroit Recreation Department is accepting applications from nonprofits for mini-grants of up to $4,000 for arts and cultural projects. The application deadline is Nov. 1, and funded projects must be completed between Feb. 1 and Sept. 30, 2011.

According to the city, mini-grants are intended to fund locally developed, high-quality projects that address local arts needs and increase public access to the arts. They support a broad range of artistic expression from all cultures through projects that preserve, produce or present traditional or contemporary arts.

The grants are financed by the State of Michigan through the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and administered by the City of Detroit Recreation Department, Arts and Culture Section. The awards will be announced in January 2011.

The Detroit Recreation Department will host a grant writing workshop in January 2011 to assist organizations interested in applying.

To obtain a grant application or for more information, go here or call 313-224-1129 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
