Preservation Wayne Honor Awards - a recognition of contributions made towards Detroit’s future

Preservation Wayne’s Preservation Honor Awards recognize notable people and projects that contribute to Detroit’s future by honoring its past. Nominated by members and selected by a jury of preservation specialists and advocates, the honorees represent a diverse array of preservation activities in metropolitan Detroit.

2005 Honor Award Recipients

Balthazar Korab, Founders Award
For his extensive body of masterful photography of the buildings that define Detroit, and for decades of celebrating the city's rich architectural heritage on the world stage.

The Kales Building, Historic Rehabilitation
One of Grand Circus Park’s crown jewels, for the vision of Mansur Development, BVH Architecture and Ferlito Construction to convert the original 1914 Kresge headquarters into residences.

Jefferson East Business Association, Community Development Award
For its commitment to the preservation and redevelopment of historic East Jefferson Avenue and its facilitation of new uses for underutilized buildings.

Historical First Congregational Church & The First Living Museum, Lucy Hamilton Education Award
Under the leadership of Rev. Lottie Jones Hood, for leveraging their historic assets to enrich and educate the community.

National City Bank of the Midwest, Corporate Responsibility Award
For championing rehabilitation financing and below-market interest rates to help Detroiters buy and restore historic buildings in urban neighborhoods.

Pure Detroit, Corporate Responsibility Award
For their passionate commitment to the history and soul of Detroit as expressed through their merchandise, programming, and stores in four of Detroit’s signature buildings.

City of Detroit Historic Designation Advisory Board, Government Leadership in Preservation Award
For their preservation assistance and encouragement, and the designation of thousands of buildings across the city.

Thomas Barwin, Government Leadership in Preservation Award
For promoting, as Ferndale City Manager, a progressive vision for regional cooperation that values preservation and urbanism as a component of sound economic development.

City of Mount Clemens DDA, Suburban Neighbor Award
For promoting the preservation of their historic buildings and using the Main Street model to revitalize the downtown area.

T-Plex Historical Complex, Preservation Pioneer Award
For Jerald Mitchell’s vision and commitment to telling the story of Detroit’s automotive heritage and for transforming the birthplace of Ford’s Model T into a centerpiece of the MotorCities National Heritage Area and a catalyst for the resurgence of the Milwaukee Junction neighborhood.
