The Delray neighborhood is set to receive a new, state of the art,
playground that children of all abilities can use — even those in
wheelchairs. People’s Community Services, the project’s sponsor, is
seeking volunteers on Saturday, May 13 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. to aid in
installation.
“This will be one of the best playgrounds in the city of Detroit.
Eighty percent of the play items will be accessible to kids in
wheelchairs, but will be fun for any kid with any ability,” says PCS
executive director Tom Cervenak says.
Cervenak says the facility makes the neighborhood more welcoming.
“Whenever a family moves into a community, they’re looking at a number
of different resources: schools, recreation, housing, the stability of
the neighborhood. We’re working on all of that….[This is a] piece of
the puzzle, along with the redevelopment of Fort Wayne and the West
Jefferson strip. Delray’s location is incredible, and hopefully people
will start to recognize that.”
Daimler Chrysler has committed 100 volunteers to the event, as well as
support for the park’s June ribbon-cutting and further development of
the ten-acre park.
Volunteers are also needed on Friday for preparation and Sunday for
finish work. To sign-up for any of the three days, call 313.554.3111 or
email
tcervenak@aol.com. Cervenak hopes that “this acts as a draw for people to come back into Delray.”
