In an era that seems to produce an ever increasing supply of trendy chain stores and a Starbucks on every corner, it's refreshing to know that the Detroit Gallery of Contemporary Crafts endures in the historic lobby of the Fisher Building. If you seek decorative objects, clothing, jewelry, and furniture that have been shaped and created with the passion of human hands, this is the place. Its gleaming glass cases are full of sleek jewelry, including fossilized walrus ivory pieces from local designer Steven Goodman. Clothing racks are artfully overflowing with Gloriah Walsh's intricately appliqued wool Melton coats. Home decor standouts include: New York designer Leonie Lacouette's wood and metal clocks and Lara Moore's rich elaborate cocktail tables. Every piece displayed is artistic and stylish, due to the discerning tastes of mother/daughter team, Judith and Pamela Primak, who travel near and far to keep the shelves stocked with exotic treasures. Plan on spending enough time to appreciate the incredible selection and visit often because some items are limited production and new items are continually popping up on the shelves.
