Local graphic artist takes reins of Movement 09's brand design

Derek Kuschel was named the brand designer for the Movement festival in a competition organizers held. The 27-year-old Ferndale resident beat out 134 other graphic designers and artists this year to win the opportunity to design the theme for this year's festival.

That means he's responsible for the overall visual aesthetic of the event, including festival advertising, t-shirts, banners and the web site. Kuschel also gets $5,000, a VIP passes for friends/family and festival gear.

The contest was held by Paxahau and 323 East (the Ohm Creative Group guys).

"We really liked the symbolism he used in his design, but what impressed us most was his technical skills and proven track record of project management," says Jason Huvaere, president of Paxahau. "Just because you can create doesn’t mean you can execute a project of this magnitude and during the interview process he showed us he is capable of doing both."

Kuschel works in the interactive department at Ringside Creative in Oak Park and before that was with Campbell-Ewald in Warren.

"When I put things together I want them to invoke feeling," Kuschel says. "I don't want them to be designs that just take up space."

He's been a big fan of the festival since its inception. "One of the coolest things for me is the sheer size of it and the people who come in from out of town," Kuschel says. "It was always something cool that was going on in the city."
