D-Biz: It's upscale at Downtown's Rio Boutique

From Jessica Ash 2-piece dresses, to Lauren Taylor pantsuits, to Swarovski crystal necklaces and Robeez shoes, Rio Boutique offers items for women, boys and girls. It's an elegant mix of new and vintage.  Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and brooches gleam through showcases in the back.

The layout of Rio looks like a floor of old Hudson's, with a smell of perfume and carpet. It's lined with full racks. Modeled outfits hang on both walls.  Owner Mamie Smith is the smiling woman probably sitting at one of the showcases. She says Rio's main focus, other than style, is customer service. The idea is to "create an image for ladies that helps them connect with their inner self," says Smith.

Smith and her staff will go out of their way to help you find the look you want. Dresses and pantsuits run from $20 to $160. The same applies for jewelry, accessories, and toddler clothing. Easy to assume prices, new or used, are generally lower than other stores with high end clothing.

Rio Boutique was opened in 1988 by Smith's daughter Meta Rose Fluker-Yetc. Her idea was to fill what she saw as a void for elegant women's fashion in Detroit. She began carrying selections ranging from business casual to cocktail party to country club. "We dress some of Detroit's and the Metropolitan area's finest ladies," she says. If the store doesn't have what you're looking for, they'll special order it.

Rio Boutique is located at 99 Monroe Street. Store hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call 313-963-3335.
