Startup News: Dermanaut hires 1 as it preps for summer launch

TechTown-based Dermanaut is finishing up its Beta testing in Metro Detroit and preparing for a national product launch this year.

The 3-year-old startup, which is also a product of Bizdom U, makes medical records software specifically for dermatologists. It has been testing it at three Metro Detroit dermatology offices and plans to formally launch it Wednesday. It has recently added an employee to help prepare for this sales launch and expects to hire another six over the next year as it builds up a national sales force.

"We're exclusively developing this for dermatologists because there is such a need," says Jon Baugh, CEO and co-founder of Dermanaut. "There is nothing out there for dermatologists."

Baugh spent a year following a local dermatologist to see what was needed in medical records software. He noticed software built for general practices didn't measure up to the needs of a dermatologist, who sees more patients and consults with them longer and more often than normal doctors. That insight helped Baugh and his co-founders craft a medical records software program around the schedules of dermatologists and it let them create an interactive map of the skin for each patient so doctors can pinpoint and benchmark problem areas.
