Greening of Detroit's new logo reflects its broadened scope

Anyone that reads this publication with some regularity knows that The Greening of Detroit is busy, and not just planting trees -- urban agriculture, forestry and education are all part of its earthy mix. In recognition of this broadened scope and in celebration of its 20th Anniversary, the organization worked with Team Detroit to develop a new logo that better reflects its complete mission: "To foster all things green, from peas to trees."

To kick off a year of celebrating, Iron Chef Michael Symon is hosting a feast that features locally-grown food at his restaurant, Roast, on September 17 at 6:30 p.m. Joining him will be celebrity chefs Traci Des Jardins, Mary Sue Milliken, Marc Vetri and Takashi Yagihashi. Local spirits and Michigan beer and wine from Black Star Farms, Brys Estate and L. Mawby will also be featured, and entertainment will be provided by The Royal Garden Trio. Tickets are $500. Call Monica Tabares at 313-285-1246 for more info.

Throughout 2009-10, Greening will host monthly events, including the full reforestation of Jefferson Avenue from Alter to Downtown, education symposiums and the opening of the new Market Garden at Eastern Market and Meyers Nursery in Rouge Park.

The 20th Anniversary celebration will end with a closing event on Sept. 25, 2010 at Eastern Market.

Stay tuned to Model D for more details throughout the year and become a Fan of Greening on Facebook for regular updates.
