Tae Kwon Do studio kicks into Hamtramck

In January, Master Greg Douglass opened Tri-State TaeKwon Do Federation on Conant in Hamtramck. Douglass intends for his facility to give a diverse cross-section of Hamtramck youth a healthy, productive outlet for their energy after school. "Martial arts teaches kids confidence, self-esteem, how to be respectful -- there's a lot involved," he says. "It's not just teaching them karate and how to fight, it also teaches them lifeskills they need to know."

Douglass has been teaching martial arts for the Hamtramck Recreation Department for 10 years, but wanted to expand the number of classes he was able to teach beyond what the community center could accommodate. "I've been very successful as far as the number of kids and the results that I've had," he says. "I've got a base set of at least 60 students."

Douglass teaches classes Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at his own studio at  9725 Conant, and Tuesdays and Thursdays at the rec center. He plans to add Saturday classes for kids aged four to seven later this month.
