Of the eleven that it awarded, the United States Department of Energy awarded two grants to Wayne State University to research improving fuel efficiency in light-duty vehicles.

Wayne State will partner with Delphi Automotive in Troy, which
is slated to receive up to $2.2 million in grant money to research up
to 30 percent fuel efficiency improvement in an "E85 optimized engine."
The school also will partner with Ford Motor Co. along with Concepts NREC and FEV Global, for up to $1.3 million to research diesel-boosting technology to improve advanced, low-temperature combustion engines.
