Cupcakes and More sweetens Ren Cen

Tower 200 in downtown's GM Renaissance Center has a new flavor of the month -- 24 flavors, to be exact.

Cupcakes and More founder Scott Culver, who launched his cupcake business out of a kiosk at Oakland Mall, chose to open his second location in downtown Detroit this spring.

"It's exciting to have a business in Detroit," Culver says. "My dad grew up in the city, so we feel a connection here. Detroit is a great city with exciting growth potential and I am happy to be here."

The cupcakes are big enough for two, but Culver says most customers buy their own after the first taste. "We've been pleasantly surprised by the amount of traffic," he says. "We weren't sure what to expect going down there, but business has been very good. And with Blue Cross Blue Shield moving in, we expect things to only get better."

The company also does lunchtime catering for many doctor's offices through the Detroit Medical Center and the Henry Ford. The locally-owned company just bought a free-standing building in Warren that will serve as their base of operations.

He says the most popular flavor of cupcake is the Bumpy Cake, reminiscent of a popular Sander's Chocolate dessert.

"But don't worry, we take out all the calories and the sugar, so it's as healthy as a rice cake," he says, and laughs. "That's just a joke."

Hours of operation for Cupcakes and More in the Ren Cen are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. It's located on the first floor of Tower 200 in the GM Renaissance Center. For more information, visit www.jjagcatering.com.
