The state Department of Environmental Quality has reached agreements with three of the four parties deemed responsible for clean-up of the Uniroyal site; in light of the complexities involved, the developers of the site have been given a three-year extension.
A company headed by ex-Pittsburgh Steeler-turned-developer Jerome
Bettis and his partner Charles Betters entered a purchase and land
development agreement with the city in 2005 to build apartments,
townhouses, retail stores and cafes.

Vincent Nathan, Detroit’s
environmental affairs director who chairs the brownfield authority,
said the extension is needed because complex negotiations on cleanup
costs and state reviews have caused delays.
